Twitter Trolling

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a dominant social media site that gives users the power to create a false identity online and talk to others around the world.  Therefore twitter users have the freedom to post what they like to who they like without facing any direct consequences. By pretending to be someone their not, they can abuse people online without them knowing who they are.

Example

Tom Daley suffered from serious abuse on twitter following the diver's failure to win a medal in the 10m synchronised diving event. Daley had been advised to keep off twitter 2 days before the event in an attempt to maintain concentration. Shortly afterwards, Daley retweeted a message from user Rileyy69 which said: 'You let your dad down i hope you know that'.  Tom Daley's Dad died from brain cancer in 2011. This is an example of a twitter user having the freedom to tweet a celebrity directly.

Above are some examples of the tweets sent to Daley and it's clear to see the severity of the abuse.
The teenager was arrested in 2012 which shows how the authorities treat online abuse seriously and that action will be taken in an attempt to stop internet trolling.
